Titans, Trials, and Tribulations Part 1: The Prime

First off, what a cool project! I feel incredibly lucky to have been chosen to take this on. I love Warhammer, I love painting minis, and quite simply, I love painting.

This is a massive project, and I’m genuinely excited about the challenge of working at this scale. As with anything this large, it has to be broken down into manageable stages. I’ve never painted a model this big, (nowhere near it!) but the fundamental process remains the same.

I received the model in pieces. A lot of pieces. Unlike a standard tabletop mini, I’m not going to permanently assemble this on the front end. It’s simply too big, and it needs to be broken down for transport. Instead, I’m priming everything in sub-assemblies. I’m dry-fitting what I can to see how parts interact, but for the most part, it’s all about the primer. And cans…so many cans of it. I’m using Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Matte Primer. I usually prefer my airbrush for priming, but I am not immortal and I wouldn't live to see the end of that process! The rattle-can primer works perfectly at this scale, and I’m really happy with the result.

My next step is to use a Vallejo white primer for a light dry brush; that’ll help the details pop and show me where I need to fill seams or do some sanding. That’s where I’m at right now: three rounds of priming down, with maybe two more to go. It’s a massive amount of plastic that needs to be covered. What was the Emperor thinking?
